Here are some of the Superfood Smoothie Mask’s bioactive-rich ingredients (including one climate hero and one farming hero) — plus some surprising facts about the familiar ones — and how they’ll help take your complexion to the next level of luminosity.

Wakame & Kombu – These seaweeds are a protein and vitamin-rich superfood eaten by humans all over the world. They are also loaded with skin-loving minerals, such as calcium, iron, folic acid, and Vitamin K.

In its wild and untamed form, seaweed creates a habitat where fish, invertebrates, birds, and marine mammals find food and protection from predators. As for its eco-superstar credentials, scientists have been assessing the carbon sequestration potential of seaweed for the last couple decades. One possible and simple solution to helping reverse climate change is to ramp up seaweed aquaculture to capture carbon dioxide (CO2). This is because seaweed (which also buffers against ocean acidification, dampens wave action, reduces coastal erosion, and cleans up waterways by absorbing excess nutrients from wastewater), and uses photosynthesis to turn carbon dioxide (CO2) into seaweed biomass. This process is known as carbon sequestration. Fast-growing seaweed is highly regenerative, and when it regenerates, it consumes CO2 at a fast rate. Once that CO2 is locked up in seaweed biomass, it can be harvested for use, or it can sink to the seafloor and be naturally stored underground, where it originated.

Their process is laborious and time-consuming; however, the practices of harvesting by hand ensure a commitment to meticulously selecting the right amount of seaweed – no more than 25% of any one species is harvested from each location per year. This ensures preservation of a delicate ecosystem that supports the regeneration of the seaweed within four months.
