Everyday Mindfulness

“Mindfulness means moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness. It is cultivated by refining our capacity to pay attention, intentionally, in the present moment, and then sustaining that attention over time as best we can. In the process, we become more in touch with our life as it is unfolding.”
     - Jon Kabat-Zinn

When you put mindfulness that way, it makes perfect sense. Being aware of the moment, in the moment, and enjoying it, not judging it, and letting it unfold before your eyes. Everything becomes a vehicle for mindfulness: from making breakfast to washing your face. And, when we treat life as present moment awareness, when we can, the most simple things become beautiful rituals.

Ritual does not need to be elaborate or religious. Ritual can be how we walk to the sink, get the water just the right temperature, reach for our skincare routine with intention, and do the very thing we did yesterday morning as if it were brand new today. Take the ritual one step further, and make your morning (or evening) routine into a daily practice.

When you turn the water on to wash your face, take a moment while it warms up to breathe - feeling your lungs fill up and then exhaling a few seconds longer than your inhale.

When you put the face wash in your palms, smell it, allowing the scent to linger in your mind, giving yourself a moment before you put hands to face.

As you wash, feel your skin beneath your fingertips. Feel the texture of your face wash, feel the relaxation as you gently massage your face.

When you are done washing, rinse with your breath as well as with the water - cleansing your lungs and your skin, which are both organs that help you take in the world.

As you put toner, oil, lotion, or moisturizer on your face, feel the moisture in your skin and give your face the love it deserves. Pat, smooth, and massage a little to appreciate your skin as it is today.

Take a moment to breathe out before you turn off the lights, and feel gratitude for good smells, soft skin, the security that what you are putting on your body and face is good for you and for the world. Then straighten your shoulders and walk out into the morning to see what life has in store for you.
