Is Facial Cleanser Really Necessary?
Whether you are looking to prevent blemishes or stave off signs of aging, washing your face is an important step in your Skincare Ritual.
Why is this the case, and what kind of cleanser should you use? We get these questions often. Since we make two fabulous Facial Cleansers, we have a little something to say about the topic. Here’s everything you need to know about cleansing your face, and why it matters:
Why is it necessary to wash your face?
Facial cleansing is the bedrock of any Skincare Ritual. Think of it as you might about cooking a great meal for people you love. You wouldn’t begin preparing vegetables on a dirty cutting board. You wouldn’t set a beautiful table for dinner littered with leftover crumbs from breakfast. You would take the time to clean the surfaces you intend to cook and eat upon.
Similarly, washing your face removes debris left over by environmental pollutants, bacteria from touching your skin, sweat, sunscreen, and makeup. Relying on plain water or Facial Toner to accomplish this is depriving your complexion of the correct tools for the job, and can reduce the efficacy of your other Skincare products.
But do you really need a cleanser that is face specific?
Won’t any soap do the trick when it comes to cleaning your face? The answer is a hard “no.” A good facial cleanser is formulated to suit the delicate nature of your complexion. Ideally it contains ingredients that will nourish as well as cleanse, and will remove exactly what isn't supposed to be there while allowing the good things to remain.
Soaps formulated for the hands and body tend to be a bit harsher than facial cleansers. They are likely to strip away the naturally occurring oil from your complexion. Doing so will cause Oily and Blemish-prone Skin Types to over-produce oil and potentially cause more breakouts. It will also deplete Dry and Mature Skin Types of their much-needed inherent moisture.
What is the best Facial Cleanser for me?
The answer, of course, depends on your Skin Type.
Typically Oily and Blemish-prone Skin Types will want to use clear cleansers that are not oil-based. These tend to remove more oil from the surface of your skin without stripping it and help restore balance to pores. Here are some of the ingredients we love in our Australian Wild Plum & Willow Facial Cleanser formulated for Combination & Oily Skin Types.
Precious Argan Oil comes from the slow-growing trees of the same name in Morocco. It is revered worldwide for its anti-aging abilities thanks to a high Vitamins E + A and omega-6 fatty acid content that absorbs easily, helps boost cell turnover, and smooths complexions for all Skin Types. While Argan Oil is an anti-aging powerhouse, it is very light and, therefore, helps reduce blemishes and balance Combination, Oily, & Blemish-prone skin beautifully.
Australian Wild Plum Extract
Known also as Kakadu Plum, this miraculous extract is loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and anti-aging properties, such as Vitamins C + E, Gallic Acid (which helps restore skin’s natural barrier of protection against free radicals), and Ellagic Acid, (which helps maintain skin’s elasticity). It also plumps skin and assists with collagen production. Australia’s First Nations communities have employed this wild-growing plant for centuries to assist with skin and health benefits.
Clary Sage Essential Oil
Mildly astringent Clary Sage helps regulate sebum production, tones skin, and helps reduce inflammation.
As a source of naturally occurring hydroxy acids, Willow Bark gently exfoliates while deeply nourishing to help skin appear smoother, firmer, and younger. Loaded with powerful antioxidants such as flavonoids and tannins, it also offers protection from environmental stressors.
Dry, Mature, and Balanced Skin Types should seek out creamier cleansers that help skin retain its inherent moisture while removing impurities from its surface. Here are some of the star ingredients in our Egyptian Calendula & Blood Orange Facial Cleanser formulated for Dry & Sensitive Skin (also great for Balanced Skin Types!):
The beautiful, yellow flowers of the Calendula plant are revered for their astringent properties. Active constituents include high levels of flavonoids, which help calm irritated skin and aid in the mitigation of both acne and acne scars.
Zesty and uplifting, yet gentle and soothing, Blood Orange Essential Oil balances all complexions from Dry to Blemish-prone. It is loaded with antioxidants, is wonderfully detoxifying, and helps stimulate circulation while reducing inflammation.
Richly moisturizing Shea Butter is a nutrient-dense fat derived from the fruit of the Karate tree in West Africa. Wealthy in Vitamins E + A, beta-carotene, and omega-6 fatty acids, it helps shield skin from environmental elements while hydrating and conditioning. Thanks to Shea Butter’s naturally occurring cinnamic acid, it also has sun-filtering properties that may reduce visible signs of aging.
Evening Primrose’s dainty, yellow flowers bloom in May and June. Their precious oil is rich in omega-6 and antioxidants for a hydrating, firming, plumping, and overall balancing effect on all Skin Types.
Have we convinced you yet? Step away from the “any old soap” you might be using as a face wash and step into your next level of amazing skin. We promise you’ll notice a difference.
