Love Notes

What is your love language? According to Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate, the five love languages are:

- Words of affirmation
- Quality time
- Physical touch
- Acts of service
- Receiving gifts

In honor of Love Note Day, which is September 26th (and also in honor of the people whose love language is words of affirmation), here are some pointers for writing the perfect love letter.

Hand Write It
Texting can be sexy, but it’s also very common and convenient. Get some beautiful paper and a good pen. Who does that anymore?  Ballers who win at love, that’s who.

Be Vulnerable
Cleverness and wit are cool and all, just be sure you’re not hiding behind them. What does your heart (rather than your mind) have to say? If you knew the world was ending tomorrow, what would you want your recipient to know?

Get Historical
We’re not talking world history (unless they’re an historian and you think they’ll find it hot). Rather, now is the time to delve into your shared past and recall a time when overcoming a struggle together has made you better. You could even bring in the metaphor of kintsugi (meaning "golden joinery"), also known as kintsukuroi ("golden repair"). This is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum to make it even stronger. You’re welcome.

Futurize
Most of us want to feel both secure and desired in our relationships. A way to accomplish this through your love letter is by mentioning how you’d like to spend your future together. You might want to talk about a shared dreams and goals. Make it meaningful and playful.

Borrow from the Best
Look to the greats who have already said it better than any of us ever could. Think Rumi, Hafiz, Shakespeare, Pablo Neruda, e.e. cummings, Rilke, Emily Brontë… you get the picture. Add a borrowed line or two to really stick the landing of your love letter.

Of course, if your boo’s love language falls more into the “receiving gifts” category, we’ve got some ideas for that.  Give them the gift of Human Care with our luxurious and exotic bodycare — also take our Skincare Routine Finder Quiz — and impress them with the purest, most efficacious products on the planet.

Happy #SustainableSelfCareSunday, and happy letter writing!
