Meet The Bioactives: Turmeric

Turmeric, also known as Curcuma Longa, is a powerful antioxidant that helps calm and reduce skin irritation. This golden root is often used in Ayurvedic medicine, and for hundreds of years it has been considered a powerful healing agent for the body. Curcuma Longa is one of the new bioactives present in all our reformulated, Plastic-free Bodycare.

Turmeric is related to ginger and, along with serving as a powerful skin and bodycare ingredient, it is available to ingest as both a ground spice and a supplement. Its health benefits are primarily a result of a bioactive component it contains called curcumin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Scientific research is just beginning to understand the positive effects of turmeric, and early studies have shown its benefits to skin include:

- helps improve skin’s natural glow and luminosity

- reduces inflammation and redness

- helps create more even skin tone

- helps reduce the appearance of scarring

For more than 20 years, we have been committed to sourcing the best ingredients, from the most caring, ethical farmers around the globe, and the turmeric we use in our formulas is no exception.

In addition to being a great ingredient in skin and bodycare, turmeric is a fabulous addition to your morning drink ritual. Here is a recipe for Vegan Golden Milk, which is delicious by itself, or you could add a shot of espresso or a spoonful of matcha if you’d like a little caffeine.

Vegan Golden Milk

Ingredients

- 2 cups unsweetened, non-dairy milk of choice (oat, almond, cashew, coconut, rice, hazelnut, etc.)
- 2 tbsp maple syrup (for a sugar-free drink, substitute a few drops of stevia for the maple syrup)
- 1 tsp ground organic turmeric
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- A dash of ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp organic coconut oil

Method
- Add ingredients to a saucepan; stir over medium heat until hot and well-combined (about 3-5 minutes).
- Serve immediately. Leftovers will keep in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
- Best served hot, and can also be enjoyed over ice (just be sure that all of the ingredients have been blended over the stove first, then allow to cool).

Enjoy!
