The Perfect Winter Bath Ritual from the Experts

Who does winter best? In my mind it’s the Scandinavians. They have a lot of it, and because of that they have created rituals that make the most of the long, cold, dark days. One of the best things about Scandinavian winter is their bath ritual. When I lived there, I got to find out first hand how amazing the circuit of hot soaks, cold dips, and saunas can be. It took a lot of coaxing to get me to leave the warm sauna and go roll in the snow, but when I did, my skin came alive.

You don’t need to be next to a fjord to get the benefits of opening your pores, rinsing off the toxins, and then returning your body to its calm normal state. You can do this in the comfort of your own bathroom. The benefits are amazing: glowing skin, reduced stress, and elevated mind.

If you don’t happen to have a fjord next to your bathroom, you can use your shower to fake it. Before you get in the bath, you can first take a really cold shower. It might take some working up to, but just a few minutes in the cold will make your body sing. Then fill a hot bath and soak.
